What Kerbside is
Kerbside is a guide to street parking in the Brisbane City Council area. It works out, from the council's published parking data and the Queensland road rules, whether a stretch of kerb is likely to be legal for the stay you choose, and what it is likely to cost. It is not run by, endorsed by or connected with Brisbane City Council or the Queensland Government.
Using it
- Each answer is an estimate, built from data that may be incomplete, out of date or wrong. The signs, lines and meters on the street are the rules. If the app and the street disagree, the street is right.
- Some things the data cannot see at all: most driveways, fire hydrants, how wide a road is, temporary signs for works and events, and signs the council has not recorded. "Probably" and "Not sure" answers say so, but a "Yes" can be wrong too.
- You are responsible for where you park and for any fine, towing or loss that follows. To the extent the law allows, we accept no liability for loss or damage arising from using Kerbside. Nothing here excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded.
- Kerbside is free to use, is provided as is, may change or stop at any time, and may be unavailable.
- Before you first see an answer, Kerbside asks you to accept that the signs at the kerb are what count and that you're responsible for where you park. Using Kerbside means accepting these terms. If they change, you'll be asked again.
- Kerbside is not legal advice and does not replace the Queensland road rules or the council's own information.
- Don't use it to scrape or bulk-download the data (which is openly licensed anyway, see below), or to overload the walking-route server.
Privacy
- Search. Addresses and places are matched on your device against an index downloaded from this site. What you type is not sent anywhere.
- Your location. Used when you tap "Near me" or "Walk back", and, if you've already allowed this site to use your location, to centre the map on you when the page opens. It's used only in your browser and never stored by us.
- Walking times and routes. To work out how far each parking spot is on foot, your browser sends the destination and the spots' positions to Kerbside's own routing server. The routing server logs only the time, the kind of request and whether it worked, never the positions or your IP address, and keeps those logs for 14 days.
- Map tiles. The base map comes from OpenFreeMap, which sees your IP address and which map tiles you load, like any website image. Everything else the page loads comes from this site.
- Stored on your device. Your recent searches, "my usual", where you parked, and that you've accepted these terms are kept in your browser's local storage so the app works offline and remembers them. Clearing site data removes them. The lists themselves are never sent to us; the usage record below notes the street when you tap "Park here", not your exact spot.
- How the site is used. To find and fix bugs, the page records what happens during a visit and sends it to Kerbside's own servers (in Australia, on Amazon Web Services; no third party sees it). That covers which screens you open, the buttons and filters you use, the day, time and length of stay you choose, the parking spots you open and the answers shown for them, the general area you search in or look at on the map (rounded to about 100 m), whether "Near me" was used (never where you were), the street and side when you tap "Park here", errors, the screen size, browser and device type, the country, and the name of the website that linked you here, if any. Each visit gets a random number, made fresh every visit, so visits can't be linked to each other or to you. Not recorded: the words you type into search, the names of places you choose, your exact location, and your IP address. Records are deleted after 90 days. If your browser sends "Do Not Track" or "Global Privacy Control", only errors are recorded, without the area or settings on screen.
- No accounts, no advertising, no cookies, no third-party analytics. We don't collect names, emails or any other personal information, unless you choose to send a report, in which case we use what you send to look into the problem.
- Reports you send. The report link opens an email in your own mail app, addressed to us, with the spot's details filled in. We only see it if you send it, and we use it only to look into that report.
Kerbside is a small, non-commercial project and is not currently required to comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth); we follow the Australian Privacy Principles anyway. Questions about this page: use the "Wrong? Report it" link on any parking spot's details.
